The dark comedy anthology series EIN MORD FREI is set in a world similar to ours, except every full age German citizen is allowed to commit one murder in life without any legal consequences. Everyone receives a red killing license for their 18th birthday which has to be turned in when the deed is done.
To make the underlying law understandable, we created the opening credits as a sequence of consecutive offhand murders – with painfully comprehensible motives. The bizarre humor is reflected in the design: collages with abstract white room, gaudy but muted color palette, characters as jumping jacks moving excessively.
But why bird heads? In the EMF world, everyone is basically outlawed, being able to be killed by or kill anyone else. In German, outlawed means „vogelfrei“ (bird free). The bird heads symbolize this really important aspect of the series. They are universal and anonymous but still showing some emotions through the affixed human eyes. Staying bird themed, the German state is represented through the federal eagle taking away the killing licence after each murder.
